A2A, Italy – Flue Gas Condensation Project

The Flue Gas Condensation project at A2A’s Brescia WtE plant is a pioneering initiative aimed at improving energy efficiency and environmental performance. This system enhances the thermal energy available for the district heating network, boosting overall energy efficiency while lowering emissions and eliminating water discharges from the flue gas treatment process. Advanced heat pumps, the system recovers latent heat from the flue gases, optimizing energy use without increasing the plant’s boiler capacity or  the amount of waste processed. As a result, energy efficiency has improved from 84% to  nearly 100% in full cogeneration mode, contributing an additional 60 MW of thermal  power to the district heating network.

The WtE now supplies almost 80% of thermal  energy compared to Brescia’s district heating system. This innovative upgrade includes  the installation of a “wet” flue gas cleaning section, a heat recovery section through  condensation, and a “tail-end” catalytic reduction system for nitrogen oxides. These  improvements have reduced NOx emissions by 20% and HCl emissions by 96%, further  enhancing the plant’s environmental performance.

Overall, the district heating system of  the municipality of Brescia has led to a 40% reduction in emissions. Moreover, the water  produced from flue gas condensation is fully recovered through a treatment plant,  producing reverse-osmosis purified water for the DHS and demineralized water for the  WtE. This eliminates water discharges by fully recovering and treating the water  produced during the process, ensuring zero wastewater impact. This project reflects  A2A’s commitment to sustainability, making Brescia’s energy system more efficient,  cleaner, and environmentally responsible.
