Ipalle, a Belgian intermunicipal association, is dedicated to waste management and energy recovery in Picardy Wallonia and South Hainaut. It promotes sustainable resource management and contributes to the energy transition. Its activities include wastewater treatment, promoting the circular economy, supporting communities, integrated network management, and developing renewable energies.
Octave, an innovative company, reuses second-life batteries from the automotive sector to integrate them into energy storage systems (BESS). Together, Ipalle and Octave launched a pilot project at the Thumaide Waste-to-Energy plant. This project uses second-life batteries to stabilize the electrical grid by charging the batteries with excess production and discharging them to supplement the grid’s power supply when needed. Currently, an industrial storage system with a power of 1.3 MW, consisting of over 500 second-life battery modules from Mercedes and Porsche, is installed on the site.
This project aligns perfectly with Ipalle’s sustainable development goals, promoting the circular economy and reducing the carbon footprint. The use of second-life batteries represents a cost-effective solution, reducing the costs of purchasing new batteries and optimizing energy efficiency. By avoiding grid imbalances, this project contributes to more efficient resource management.
The benefits for Ipalle include innovation, sustainability, and compliance with the EU regulatory framework for battery reuse. Future steps include extending the power and installing fast charging stations for waste collection trucks. Additionally, there are plans to use second-life batteries at administrative sites and wastewater treatment plants to optimize energy use and provide backup power.
