The 11th CEWEP Waste-to-Energy Congress, held on 5th – 6th June at the European Solidarity Centre in Gdańsk, marked a record-breaking milestone with nearly 300 participants from 26 countries—the highest attendance in the Congress’s history.
“The record-breaking turnout at this year’s Congress is a clear sign that Waste-to-Energy is gaining the recognition it deserves as a key player in Europe’s transition to a circular and climate-neutral economy,” said Paul De Bruycker, President of CEWEP. “Bringing together such a diverse group of experts and stakeholders enables us to have rich, forward-thinking discussions that will drive the sector’s innovation and policy alignment in the years ahead.”
The event was also honoured with the patronage of the Polish Presidency of the European Union, the City of Gdańsk, and Gdańsk University of Technology.
On 5th June a full-day conference took place where the participants engaged in dynamic discussions on key topics such as implementation of EU waste laws, WtE’s decarbonisation strategies, future waste streams and their management, and effective WtE communication. On the second day of the event a technical seminar allowed for a full immersion into the topic of PFAS management. It was followed by a site visit to the newly opened Port Czystej Energii WtE plant. The Congress successfully offered the attendees a comprehensive view of the latest developments in WtE technology and policy.
Evening events’ highlights included the Ignis Award, honouring the legacy of Carsten Spohn. Carlotta Pagani (A2A/Politecnico di Milano) received the Award for her work on using AI to optimise energy management at the Silla2 WtE plant, and to Johan Böni (Magaldi/ETH Zürich) for his research on improving metal recovery through dry incineration bottom ash treatment. The winners were honoured at the CEWEP Congress Welcome Dinner on 4th June and are offered a two-week traineeship at a European WtE plant.
This year’s Congress provided valuable networking opportunities, fostering collaboration among stakeholders committed to sustainable waste management and energy recovery.
