Press Release: CEWEP welcomes Energetika Celje, bringing Slovenia into the European Waste-to-Energy network

CEWEP, the Confederation of European Waste-to-Energy Plants, has welcomed Energetika Celje as its newest member, bringing Slovenia into the European Waste-to-Energy network for the first time.
Energetika Celje operates Toplarna Celje, Slovenia’s only municipal Waste-to-Energy plant. Commissioned in 2009 the plant treats the non-recyclable fraction of municipal waste from the Savinjska region, with an annual capacity of up to 40,000 tonnes.
Through combined heat and power (CHP) production, the plant recovers around 40,000–45,000 MWh of district heat and around 9,000 MWh of electricity each year, supplying heat to roughly 7,300 households and 350 commercial and public customers via the Celje district heating network. Since commissioning, Toplarna Celje has processed more than 467,300 tonnes of non-recyclable waste – diverting close to one million cubic metres from landfill.

With Energetika Celje, CEWEP’s membership now spans 25 countries, united by high environmental standards, low emissions and the efficient recovery of energy from residual waste that cannot be sustainably recycled.
