ARC, Denmark – The EU Top Candidate Debate – An Afternoon in the Name of Democracy

Do the European Parliament elections and a top candidate debate focused on, among other things, waste usually go hand in hand? Not really.

Yet, on 4th June, 2024, ARC, in collaboration with Denmark’s largest trade union 3F, hosted a debate between the Danish top candidates for the European Parliament elections on June 9.

The goal of the event was to:

  • Provide the candidates with a memorable experience at ARC’s modern waste-to-energy plant
  • Shift the candidates’ focus to the fact that waste policy is European policy
  • Build relationships with the candidates.

Top candidates from all parties participated in the debate in a packed hall at Amager Bakke, attended by 3F members, ARC employees, and local community. The two-hour-long debate covered various topics, discussing fair conditions for people, climate, and the environment.

The debate was covered by the nationwide TV channel TV2.

From the stage, candidates and the audience could look directly through windows into the flue gas cleaning equipment, providing a great backdrop for discussing Waste-to-Energy. The candidates discussed issues such as waste import, how waste-to-energy helps solve an environmental problem and contributes to energy security, and how EU legislation sets the framework for Waste-to-Energy in Europe.
