HVC, The Netherlands – Expedition Clean World

Guided by the voice of the Waste-to-Energy plant – dreaming of a different job –visitors to expedition Clean World embark on a sustainable adventure at HVC in Alkmaar. In a mix of listening, doing and watching, the plant takes schoolchildren, interested parties and officials on a journey through a story about climate change, sustainability, circular economy and our consumer behavior.

Seven Dutch artists used walls of the plant for illustrations that bring the story of climate, clean energy, waste and reuse to life. The colorful scenes playfully confront visitors with our own purchasing behavior and reveal clean and innovative alternatives.

The Plant Speaks

As narrator, the plant itself shares its dreams of a future in which its own work has become redundant and it can transform into something it would much rather be: an amusement park. And to make that dream come true, it needs the help of the visitor. How can they make the plant unemployed?

The story takes you from the household goods world to the polluted water world and shows you the – normally invisible – consequences of the consumer society. The plant also shows you that – as long as it continues to do this work – it makes heat and electricity from the residual waste.

Along the way, you will discover how you can help out the plant out by adjusting your purchasing behavior and lifestyle: reducing, repairing, waste separation and using alternative energy sources. At the end of the tour, visitors can write down on a piece of paper what they are going to change to contribute to a cleaner world and hang this in the ‘promise tree’. In 2024, around 4.550 visitors took part in the expedition.
