Lipor, Portugal – WASH, Transforming Incinerator Bottom Ash to High-end Household Products

Elevating waste within the value chain unlocks its full potential while minimising environmental impact. Lipor has envisioned that Incinerator Bottom Ash (IBA) could be transformed into high-end household products. This vision came to life with the creation of WASH — a reinterpretation of the traditional set of soap dispenser, sponge and cloth, designed for those who value both beauty and versatility.

WASH is made from an innovative composite material that consists of at least 70% mechanically treated incinerator bottom ash and an eco-resin, significantly reducing the product’s carbon footprint. Extensive physical and chemical tests were conducted to ensure the material’s suitability and safety for its intended use.

The composite is especially suited for high-end kitchen environments, as it resembles ceramics—thanks to the original composition of IBA—while offering an impact resistance more similar to plastic, making it less likely to break in the event of an accidental fall.

In 2020, WASH won the prestigious Red Dot Award in the Materials and Surfaces category, one of the world’s largest and most renowned design competitions. Since then, Lipor has focused on industrialising production and have already successfully produced 40 units of the smaller dispenser.

With every WASH produced, we are taking meaningful steps toward a sustainable future. WASH embodies the powerful convergence of technology, environmental responsibility, and aesthetics, and it could very well herald the beginning of an “Urban Waste to Luxury Taste” movement.
